It's time! The Christmas commercials of 2025 (with one clear winner, loads of Christmas trees and a few absolute disasters)

Clichés in Christmas commercials. They're part of the territory. But you can definitely overdo it. Too many brands this year have chosen far too many clichés (making them rather dull). From the BFG to Puss in Boots, from Keira Knightley to Fleetwood Mac - it's all here. And there's one clear (familiar, trusted) winner. Let’s enjoy (almost) all the (predominantly) British Christmas commercials of 2025.

Lonely at the top

John Lewis stands alone at the top once again. Storytelling at its finest. Father and son struggle to communicate. Son gives dad a vinyl record. Bang - connection restored. Just like old times. 'If you can't find the words, find the gift.' Their best ever? No. The winner of 2025? Absolutely, though I find it slightly too clichéd and therefore not particularly surprising. But genuinely excellent, nonetheless. And that's partly thanks to the 90s banger 'Where Love Lives' by Alison Limerick. Guaranteed to be a hit in the clubs again this Christmas in England. 

Almost as good

A four-minute rom-com starring Keira Knightley—and yes, it's exactly as brilliant as it sounds. Phil (Joe Wilkinson) is a widower who, according to his late wife's wishes, can only date Keira Knightley. And voilà... there she is in the supermarket. They fall in love, things nearly go wrong, but everything works out—thanks to Waitrose products. One tiny criticism: four minutes really is quite long for repeated viewing. But still, it's brilliantly executed.

The best of the rest

Last year it never appeared - the Ocean Spray commercial. But they're back! And just as wonderfully awkward as always. Bryan Cranston is... the devil. Who devours everyone's Ocean Spray products. As only the devil can. I'm a fan.

Easons Ireland

It might have been my own emotional state, but I got a proper lump in my throat from Easons Ireland. Hits exactly the right note in everything. About the magic of storytelling and the bond between grandfather and granddaughter. Traditional Christmas commercial without going over the top.

Deutsche Telekom

video: Deutsche Telekom

'There's no message heavier than the one we don't send.' Deutsche Telekom pulls it off again. Third year running as one of the best commercials. Woman carries a (literal) heavy burden. Row with her mother. Eventually, a simple text: sorry. Top-tier commercial.

EE

video: EE

'Ride on Time' by Blackbox. Then you immediately know EE's tempo. And that tempo is deliciously high. Modern take on all the standard commercials. Everything revolves around mobile networks, which makes sense (for EE and for Christmas 2025). With a lovely (human) twist at the end. Well done.

Tesco

video: Tesco

Tesco opts for a series of mini stories featuring all the English Christmas rituals ('I had an opinion, that's what happened' & 'It's a biscuit!'). 'Christmas isn't perfect, but that's what makes it Christmas.' So recognisable, in everything. Compliments.

Fat Face

Basically, very simple, but Fat Face makes me genuinely happy. Also, because of the content angle ('Take a moment') that you can build out across multiple channels. Simply executed, powerful concept. A proper top Christmas commercial.

NSPCC

video: NSPCC

The NSPCC commercial leaves me speechless. A heavy subject, because for many children, Christmas means fear. Inspired by a true story. 'Ring, ring, ring.' You feel the fear and horror. Enhanced by 'Ring Christmas Bells.' Impactful commercial. Absolutely must-watch.

Surprises

Impressed by Schuh. Modern vibe, far from stuffy, yet maintains Christmas feeling. Music is excellent. Casting exceptional. Past, present, future. Thanks to a dive into the past, woman regains her enthusiasm for Christmas (and for Schuh). Indeed, a nod to Charles Dickens.

Lexus

'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac. Lexus chooses a genuinely brilliant song for their 2025 Christmas commercial. The song alone makes me want to watch this commercial repeatedly. And... there's no showroom in sight. For a car brand, that's a massive surprise. Otherwise, not particularly special (family through the years, different car each time, from couple to family to grandchild).

JD Sports

video: JD Sports

This isn't a Christmas commercial but a content campaign. One I wish I'd thought of myself. JD Sports gave 286 young people a phone to 'see the future.'. Loads of genuine, recognisable footage of young people living their lives. Social first.

Perfume Shop

I had to laugh at Perfume Shop. Very recognisable if you have (or have had) teenagers. Woman searching something for daughter, perfectly mimics daughter in shop. Without losing sight of Christmas atmosphere. Really nicely done.

Telstra

Animation for Telstra. Gothic girl finally finds her soulmate (nobody understands her): a little ghost. Slightly bizarre. Surprising indeed. I'm not sure if I think it's good or bad, but it sticks.

Burberry's is delightful. Quintessentially English. Jennifer Saunders is the lady of the house. Christmas atmosphere squared. Nothing innovative. Just good. Hey, it looks like Burberry... Also featuring Naomi Campbell (remember this one?) and Son Heung-min.

Barbour

Barbour hits the bullseye again. With Wallace and Gromit. Absolutely beautifully made, lovely storyline, wonderfully familiar. One of the standouts.

LEGO

Playing with your sister. When you're 12. No way. But then the LEGO world comes to life to help. Including a hilarious cover of 'Hello' by Lionel Richie. Absolutely brilliant. And more emotion in the commercial than LEGO has shown in recent years.

Argos

Suddenly you're in a thriller, not a Christmas commercial. Toy doll and dragon threaten man being rude about Argos. Surprising start, nice approach. Then it weakens and an espresso machine appears. Still entertaining enough.

Guinness

'Even at the home of the black stuff, they dream of a white one.' This Guinness one is 'simply' beautiful. Snow, loads of atmosphere, beautifully shot, good music. Lovely.

Shelter

A mega-adorable little boy stars in Shelter's commercial. Starts happy. Boy sings 'Total Eclipse of the Heart.' Everywhere and nowhere. An earworm. Later we discover why: mother has been on hold with the housing association for an hour and a half (because they’re homeless). The song's been on speaker for an hour and a half. Painful ending.

Sainsbury's

BFG saves Christmas! Together with Annie, from Sainsbury's. Evil giant eats everything. BFG provides new products. Thank goodness. High production quality.

Starbucks

Starbucks chooses the 'Drawing Together' concept. Really nicely done. Little drawings on coffee cups. Man and woman eventually get together. Sweet idea. The Proclaimers ('500 Miles') is naturally gold.

Hobby Lobby

Girl loves drawing. Draws snowman. Next day there's a snowman in the garden. Draws toy soldiers. Go, toy soldiers. Draws sleigh with reindeer. Go, a sleigh with... dog in front. Girl laughs. All thanks to Hobby Lobby. Not bad at all.

At least a proper Christmas vibe

'Too soon? Never.' That's how Debenhams' commercial begins. I completely agree. The department store goes all out. With stars (Olivia Attwood, Judi Love, Peter Crouch – the latter is always a plus) and a parade with loads of bling. Nothing particularly special. Good Christmas vibe though.

Not On The High Street

Not On The High Street, online shop for small brands, does it with real stories from real people. Three stories. Three commercials. Sympathetic.

Smyths Toys

The toy catalogue from Smyths Toys plays the starring role. I like that. Who doesn't love the toy catalogue? Christmas bells complete it. (You can forget the storyline - boy wants toys, dog helps him find them in shop).

Lidl

video: Lidl

Clichés everywhere. At Lidl. Girl talks about the Christmas spirit. And you see loads of happy people. And a turkey. Christmas explodes off your screen. Otherwise, the standard is very average. But the music! Wow! (Beach Boys! At Christmas!)

M&S Food

video: M&S Food

Saw Jennifer Saunders earlier, now her partner Dawn French appears too. And again at M&S Food. With her elf. In traffic. Dawn angry. Magic. Truck full of food. Atmosphere is good, first part fun, second part bleh (because just food).

Morrisons

video: Morrisons

Christmas all year round. That's apparently how it is for Morrison's staff. Funny angle. Good acting. Christmas classics are brilliantly woven throughout.

Manchester City

video: Manchester City

Manchester City does well. Children, footballers (Phil Foden), old heroes (Mike Summerbee), a good cause. Mix of nostalgia and future. Soaked in City blue.

Arsenal

And Arsenal does it better. Little boy (well cast!) goes on nocturnal adventure in Arsenal stadium. 'Make Arsenal dreams come true.' With lovely Amy Winehouse number ('Our Day Will Come').

Chelsea

Chelsea, the magic of blue. Starts very mediocre, with girl dreaming about Chelsea. I nearly switched off. The surprise comes in part two, where an emotional second layer is added (man misses deceased wife, 'blue' connects them).

Dior

Some things never change, and sometimes that's nice. Dior does it again with Anya Taylor-Joy. Atmospheric. Classy. Incomprehensible. Beatles. Christmas.

Selfridges

video: Selfridges

Selfridges has more Disney atmosphere than Disney itself (see later), remarkable. Tinkerbell plays the starring role. Beautifully made. Properly Christmassy.

Save the Children

Takes far too long, but Save the Children's commercial is otherwise fine. Old-fashioned craftsmanship. Shaun the Sheep is back. Knitting jumpers for charity (Christmas Jumper Day).

O2

video: O2

Beautiful message from O2 this Christmas: spend time with each other.

Kroger

video: Kroger

Another Kroger animation. Same recipe as other years. Girl bakes gingerbread biscuits. Special version (saluting biscuit) for dad returning from the army. Sweet.

National Trust

And this one's sweet too. And nice. From National Trust. Little animals (made from wool and fabric) give each other presents. From the heart. So it's not about how big the gift is, but the thought behind it. Just so you know.

Missed opportunities

video: Missed opportunities

High energy. A lost snowman. Loads of sport. Bit of Christmas. I certainly get cheerful from this Sports Direct ad. But there was more potential.

Liverpool

video: Liverpool

The worst-performing football club is Liverpool. Not only disappointing in the league, their Christmas commercial scores poorly too. Little feeling, zero emotion. Couple of famous footballers.

Boots

video: Boots

Another worn-out (fairy tale) character. Puss in Boots. Naturally for... Boots. Only shame is that after 20 seconds the cat walks into the shop and that's it for the concept. Production value is high. Beautifully made. Bonus: Duran Duran at the end. Had more potential.

Disney

video: Disney

Girl sends letter to Father Christmas, including doodle. Doodle comes to life and lies under Christmas tree. They do everything together. Doodle has no mouth. Sad. Girl asks for Mr Potato Head for Christmas (from Toy Story) and doodle gets mouth. Then talking, lots of talking. I find this Disney commercial complicated, too long and just not funny/atmospheric/emotional enough. Shame.

Etsy

The little drummer boy. Etsy's commercial this year. Restless little boy turns out to be a drummer in the making. Teacher recognises it and gives him drumsticks. Via Etsy naturally. Nice, small, but lacks the real wow factor. They have two others by the way: Crossing Guard and Soccer Coach.

Matalan

video: Matalan

There's a Christmas tree. A fireplace. Presents. But the slogan 'It's showtime' promises a lot. Not delivered by Matalan.

M&S Fashion

video: M&S Fashion

M&S Fashion, Home and Beauty throws in 'Rhythm is a Dancer.' Always nice. Otherwise too average for words.

White Stuff

video: White Stuff

White Stuff seeks collaboration with rescue dogs. Who then play the starring role. Well, it's fine. I don't get particularly enthusiastic about it.

National Lottery

video: National Lottery

Olympic diver Tom Daley puts on a hideously ugly Christmas jumper for the National Lottery. Incomprehensible commercial. Daley acts surprisingly well though.

Heathrow Airport

video: Heathrow Airport

Bears at Heathrow Airport again. Old bears this year. Getting a bit boring now. It's all fine, but innovation is really needed now.

A waste of effort

The Grinch. Yaaaaaawn. A terrible cover of 'Let It Snow.' Yaaaaaawn. Grinch thaws when he spots Asda. A nomination for best makeup of 2025. Nothing more. Dreadful commercial.

Good Housekeeping

Cringeworthy start to Good Housekeeping's Christmas commercial. Out of tune. With lyrics that don't fit. And the biscuits haven't even started singing yet. Primary school amateur hour. Can't make anything more of it, unfortunately.

Aldi

A cauliflower dog. And then you know enough. Aldi goes for Kevin the Carrot again. In case you didn't know: I find it outdated, played out, not funny. But Aldi does. Part 1 has a terribly dull, overused reference to Love Actually. Part 2 as well. Totally unfunny. I'm skipping part 3.

Fortnum & Mason

Boring, boring, boring. Fortnum & Mason. Did I mention it was boring?

Freemans

To be fair, they were first this year: Freemans. But damn, what a disappointment! An exact copy of 2024. Again with Sophie Ellis-Bextor knocking on random doors and pushing presents inside. Boring.

LOOKFANTASTIC

LOOKFANTASTIC? Meaningless. People at table. Presents. Molly-Mae Hague (from Love Island). Skip it!

Dobbies

And this one too. Dobbies. Christmas in every sense. That's it.

Amazon

Amazon, boo! The 2023 commercial gets dragged out of mothballs. Not okay, Amazon.

Coca-Cola

It's certainly Christmas at Coca-Cola. There are little animals too. But otherwise? Nothing. And again AI (with again loads of criticism). Come on, do something new, something surprising. Something fun... (and don't say AI is new – no, it isn't).

Yankee Candle

A Yankee Candle makes you float. Or something. They try to claim the word 'magic.' Failed. But there is a Christmas tree.

Home Instead

video: Home Instead

Home Instead (so elderly people can stay safely at home longer) drags Kevin from Home Alone (yes, the real one) out of mothballs. Not funny, too many inside jokes, complicated execution. Obviously, a quick job for Macaulay Culkin.

Macy's

video: Macy's

The most beautiful stories begin at Macy's. But that doesn't apply to this year's Christmas commercial. With a ChatGPT storyline and made with so little love it's almost impressive.

Tiffany & Co.

Huh? Anya Taylor-Joy? Doesn't she work exclusively for Dior? This year for Tiffany's too apparently. Completely meaningless.

Flannels

video: Flannels

Flannels. Too difficult for me. Too little Christmas.

British Garden Centres

video: British Garden Centres

So amateurish I suspect British Garden Centres of doing it deliberately. Voice-over is good though. Otherwise, mediocre (girls dream of Christmas in summer, go to garden centre, fill car and hang lights).

The Home Depot

video: The Home Depot

Also skip The Home Depot. Something about decorating your house or something. I didn't quite understand it.

Special mention

video: Special mention

Majestic Wine. I find it hilarious. But that's not how it's intended. A commercial as if made in the 1980s by, I assume, a former production assistant who'd quite like to get into communications.

What's the conclusion of Christmas commercial year 2025?

For the first time in ages, John Lewis is once again the clear winner by miles. The traditional top performers are finally doing well again. Waitrose scores too, as does Tesco. Naturally there are disappointments, but the average standard in England remains very high. What's noticeable is that there's slightly more choice for clichés. And that goes just a bit too far. A good Christmas commercial cocktail consists, in my view, of 30% clichés, 20% surprise/creativity, 30% content (storyline) and 20% decent fundamentals (music, casting). The cliché percentage this year is at least 50% for many brands – that's too much and comes at the expense of creativity and storyline. 

Time for the results. First, the Christmas commercial song of the year. Clear winner is 'Landslide' by Fleetwood Mac. Second place goes to 'Where Love Lives' by Alison Limerick. Third is Amy Winehouse ('Our Day Will Come'). Honourable mention for The Proclaimers (because they're The Proclaimers). 

And then the final winners. John Lewis, by far. NSPCC is co-winner of 2025 – a gripping commercial you don't necessarily expect at Christmas, but which really captures the Christmas spirit. Same with Waitrose, mainly because the quality of everything is incredibly high. Other personal favourites? Easons Ireland, Deutsche Telekom, Tesco, Shelter, Perfume Shop and Ocean Spray. Classics and new names. Always enjoyable. 

It's been another brilliant year. With lots of familiar ingredients, a dash of surprise and plenty of delicious irritation. It's Christmaaaaaaaaaaaaaaas!
