How do you make a website feel like a visit to Artipelag?

For Artipelag, this project was about more than launching a new website. The goal was to create a digital experience that reflects what makes the destination unique, the meeting point of art, architecture, and nature. Before visitors even step through the doors.

Together, we created a new website that captures the feeling of Artipelag and makes it easier to discover exhibitions, events, and everything else happening at the destination.

  • New website inspired by Artipelag’s architecture, nature, and artistic identity

  • New information architecture and clearer user journeys

  • Visual concept based on the building’s distinctive design language

  • Modern WordPress platform focused on editor usability

A digital experience shaped by its surroundings

Artipelag is anything but an ordinary museum.

Architecture, nature, and art are just as much a part of the experience as the exhibitions themselves. It’s also what has made Artipelag one of Sweden’s most distinctive cultural destinations.

When it was time to redesign the website, the ambition was clear. The digital experience needed to feel closer to the experience visitors encounter on-site.

Through workshops and effect mapping, we explored both business needs and visitor expectations. At the same time, we reworked the site’s structure, navigation, and content to make it easier to use, whether you’re buying tickets, planning a visit, or discovering a new exhibition.

Challenge

Artipelag’s previous website no longer did the destination justice. As a place where art, architecture, and nature come together, the digital experience needed to feel just as inspiring as a visit in person. The challenge was to create a website that better reflects Artipelag’s identity and creative expression, while making it easier to navigate and manage.

Solution

Through workshops, effect mapping, and close collaboration with the Artipelag team, we developed an entirely new WordPress website. The design draws inspiration from the building’s architecture, materials, and visual language. At the same time, a new information architecture makes it easier for both visitors and editors to find what they need.

When the building became the design manual

Artipelag’s identity goes far beyond the art itself.

It’s found in the architecture, the materials, and the relationship between the building and the surrounding landscape.

That’s why the design process started with the destination itself.

The distinctive diagonal shapes were inspired by the building’s architecture. Lines and graphic elements draw from the wooden panels found throughout the venue. The spacious layouts and restrained colour palette take their cues from the meeting of wood, concrete, art, and the archipelago landscape.

The goal was never to recreate the building online.

The goal was to make the website feel like Artipelag.

The result is a digital experience where visitors encounter the same visual language and atmosphere online as they do on-site, before they’ve even stepped through the entrance.

iO quickly understood Artipelag’s needs and the challenges we were facing. From the outset, we were aligned, and the project moved forward through a clear process and close collaboration. The result is a well-structured, user-friendly, and visually stunning website.

Together with Artipelag, we worked closely throughout the entire process, from workshops and planning to design, development, and launch. By combining strategy, design, and technology, we created a website that strengthens the brand while making everyday content management simpler for editors.

The close collaboration made it possible to make decisions quickly, refine solutions along the way, and ensure the final result met both business goals and visitor needs.
