How do you create a digital platform that makes complex knowledge easier to find and use?

Scleroseforeningen (the Danish Multiple Sclerosis Society) communicates with people who have very different needs. They include people who have just been diagnosed, people living with MS, relatives, volunteers and political decision-makers. The task was more than building a new website. It was about making extensive, complex knowledge easier to find, understand and use.

  • Three main digital universes aimed at different needs and target groups

  • A WordPress multisite platform with a shared design system

  • WCAG 2.1 AA as the basis for design and development

  • Identity Hub for login, member data and personalisation

  • Integrations with AD, CRM and Azure B2C

The challenge

MS is a complex disease, and the need for information changes throughout the course of the illness. Scleroseforeningen communicates with people living with the disease, relatives, members, volunteers and external stakeholders. This called for a digital platform where users can quickly find the information relevant to their situation, without the organisation's internal structure dictating the experience.

The solution

iO started from concrete user journeys and developed a new WordPress multisite platform with a shared design system. Three overarching universes make it easier for users to navigate to relevant content. Flexible components and targeted landing pages make it possible to tailor the experience to different needs and stages of the illness. iO also developed an Identity Hub, which handles login, member data and personalisation.

Scleroseforeningen x iO: A platform developed with the user at the centre

Scleroseforeningen has a complex communication task with many different target groups and needs. The collaboration therefore started from the users' situation rather than the organisation's internal structure. Working with user journeys made it clearer what information different users need and how they move through the digital experience. This became the foundation for the UX, the information architecture and the technical solution.

At the same time, Scleroseforeningen and iO worked closely together to create a platform that is both simple for users and flexible for the organisation.

How do you make complex information easier to find?

Users are at different points in their illness and therefore don't need the same information. The platform is structured around three universes: Knowledge, Life with MS and Get Involved. This structure makes it easier to find relevant content, from knowledge about the disease to support in everyday life and ways to get involved in the association. Targeted landing pages were also developed. They can gather content around specific situations and needs.

How do you build accessibility in from the start?

Accessibility was a central part of the task for Scleroseforeningen. The platform is therefore developed with WCAG 2.1 AA as a requirement for both design and implementation. Accessibility was considered from the beginning rather than added on top of a finished solution. This means that considerations for, among other things, physical and cognitive challenges are an integral part of the digital experience.

How do you create a more personal member experience?

The new platform is also the foundation for a more personal relationship between Scleroseforeningen and its members. With Identity Hub, members can log in and view or change their master data. The solution also supports personalised content and a range of automated processes. Identity Hub is integrated with AD, CRM and Azure B2C. It makes it possible to manage member data, newsletter subscriptions, self-service and access to targeted content. This means Scleroseforeningen can give members a more relevant digital experience and reduce a number of manual internal processes.

Scleroseforeningen is a patient association with many different target groups, ranging from people living with the disease and their relatives to stakeholders and decision-makers in the political landscape. It is a complex communication task, which our new website had to accommodate. It was also important to us to get a dynamic and scalable platform that supports our strategic goal of more direct member communication and makes it easy for us to realise new initiatives.

A digital foundation that can evolve with its users

Scleroseforeningen now has a digital platform that starts from users' different needs, in terms of the course of the illness, their situation and their relationship with the association. For users, this means a clearer path to knowledge, support and ways to get involved. For Scleroseforeningen, it means a more flexible platform where the organisation can continue working on content, target groups and new digital initiatives. With WordPress multisite, a shared design system and Identity Hub, Scleroseforeningen has a technical foundation that allows it to develop the digital experience further without starting over.
