How Alliander gained control of all its digital channels with a scalable Digital Experience Platform

A future-proof digital foundation for a complex organisation  
Organisations with multiple brands, target audiences and digital channels can quickly face fragmentation. If you run several websites and have varying needs across your target audiences and growing ambitions, it is difficult to maintain consistent, scalable communication.  

For Alliander, which was facing all of the above, we developed a modular Digital Experience Platform (DXP) based on Sitecore. As the central digital foundation, it supports the ambition to operate as a single organisation with a shared architecture, consistent working methods, and uniform customer service across all channels.  

As the first and most important application on this platform, we developed liander.nl. This website serves as the central starting point for customers and as the foundation for further rollout across other brands and channels.

The rationale for Alliander’s new digital foundation

Alliander plays a crucial role in the energy transition. The company is working towards an energy supply that gives everyone equal access to reliable, affordable and sustainable energy. However, the speed and scale of this transition require an organisation that operates decisively and works as a single entity. And not to forget: a digital environment that supports this way of working.  

Therefore, Alliander needed a central foundation to help translate priorities across the organisation and to offer customers a consistent experience across all channels. The focus was on scalability, flexibility, and the ability to support multiple brands and value chains within a single platform.

About Alliander

Working together on a scalable digital architecture

Our collaboration with Alliander began with customer research and data analysis, forming the basis for a future-proof architectural design. Based on these insights, we developed the DXP and guided the organisation and the brands in their digital development. 

Within this architecture, we opted for a headless and modular DXP. This makes handling content, channels and technology more flexible and forms the basis for a future-proof digital environment.  

The first application we built in this environment was liander.nl. It laid a solid foundation for the further integration of Alliander’s other brands and channels.  

By focusing on modularity and scalability from the outset, we created not just a single website solution but a platform that structurally supports further growth.

A single platform as the foundation for all digital channels

The Sitecore DXP brings content, technology and channels together within a single central architecture. This ensures consistency across all digital touchpoints and enables the management of multiple brands and websites from a single foundation. 

Within the platform, liander.nl serves as Alliander’s primary communication channel and destination portal. The website is a user-friendly expert guide within the complex energy system. By guiding customers step by step along the way, they can easily find the right information and the underlying transactional environments. In doing so, we have paid particular attention to digital accessibility and e-inclusion in accordance with European standards.  

By focusing on self-service, clear communication and integration with data sources, customers gain a clearer understanding of their personal situation, the progress of their work and the impact of their choices. This contributes to a consistent experience across all touchpoints.  

Since its launch, the platform has been continuously developed. Together with Alliander, we are working in short iterations to expand, optimise and enrich the platform and the connected channels. These include corporate websites, careers portals and operational platforms. 

Greater coherence, greater scalability and better experiences

With the new platform, Alliander offers a consistent and accessible digital experience via liander.nl. Customers are increasingly able to manage their energy affairs independently and receive better guidance when making choices within the energy system, even if they are less digitally savvy.  

In addition, Alliander has gained greater control over its digital landscape. By working from a single, scalable foundation, there is greater coherence across technology, communication, and working methods. This helps them to respond more quickly to new developments and fulfil their social role more effectively.
